Upcoming Classes

Walking Kumano Kodo, Ancient UNESCO Pilgrimage Trail
Saturday, January 28th 9:00am JST

8am AWST/ 10am AEST/ 12pm NZST on Saturday, January 28th

7pm EST/ 6pm CST/ 4pm PST on Friday, January 27th

The Kumano Kodo is a more than 1000-year-old ancient pilgrimage trail in Japan, where people from all walks of life – imperial families, aristocrats, shoguns, samurais, and commoners – walked for spiritual cleansing and virtual rebirth. Today, the ancient trails are a registered UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. In this seminar, we will virtually walk the trail and discover the beautiful history, culture, and life in Kumano.

Walking mountain trails in Japan is one of the best ways to see "real" Japan, and together we will discover the unique, beautiful history and culture of Kumano doing this virtual walk. There are five routes for the Kumano Kodo, with the route that the Imperial family once walked (Nakahechi) as the most frequented. We will also take this route. We will visit the Kumano Sanzan, the 3 Grand Shrines of Kumano, walking from village to village. We will also virtually experience Japanese traditional accommodation, wearing yukata cotton kimono for dinner, taking an onsen (hot spring bath), and sleeping on a futon.

90-minute online tea ceremony experience with the discussion of how to implement Zen philosophy in the busy daily lives to stay focused and stay centered, followed by demonstration of tea ceremony and detailed insturction of how to make tasty matcha.

In the online class, you will experience and learn a modern tea ceremony that we conduct at a table, so you can casually try with utensils you already have at home.

*If you have your own matcha set (details to be sent in the booking confirmation email) please follow what Kana does as she gives detailed instruction.  In that case please prepare your matcha tea set prior to the session. But this is optional, so if you just want to watch and learn, you don't have to prepare anything and please enjoy watching the choreographed movements, which are very calming.
Sustainable and Ageless KIMONO
No events are scheduled at this time. Would like to be notified when it’s back? Use the below booking form to request for the notification.
The structural differences between western clothes and kimono come from differences in the fundamental philosophies running behind each culture.

In this class, we will discuss 1) the definition of kimono, 2) different types of kimono for both men and women, 3) philosophy reflected in kimono, 4) how to wear kimono, and 5) dignified posture when dressed in kimono.

Guests will come away with increased and deepened understanding of the beautiful philosophy behind the Japanese national garment.
Complete Guide to Geisha Culture
Saturday, September 10th  9:00~10:30am JST
PDT: 5pm Friday 9th
EDT: 8pm Friday 9th
AEDT: 11am Saturday 10th

This experience is organized so you can fully understand the real geisha culture (not what is falsely described in some famous movie...) and get ready to fully enjoy the special moment at Geisha entertainment when you attend one in the future.

Based on Kana's experience of attending Geisha entertainment dinner numerous times in Kyoto for work, she will explain the real geisha culture using photos and videos.

*Please note this is not real-time geisha entertainment interacting with geisha ladies -- this is a class where we discuss the geisha culture using photos and videos.

More Classes Coming Up!

Message from Kana

Since 2009, I have been lucky enough to meet and guide over 5,000 guests from around the world and enjoyed sharing the beauty of Japan.

At the same time, I realize that not everyone who is interested in Japan is actually visiting here.  And among those who do visit Japan, not everyone hires a guide -- this means the number of people I can meet and share the beauty of Japan with is incredibly tiny.

During the COVID time, I started offering online experiences and seminars about Japanese culture through travel companies, and I was happily surprised that I could meet so many more people at one time than I can during in-person tours.

For this reason, I decided to keep offering online classes myself even after COVID has been somewhat settled so I can continue meeting those who are interested in Japan, and share my passion and knowledge about Japanese beautiful culture.

I look forward to meeting you and sharing fun study time with you!
